Why Baan Tai Is the Best Kitesurfing Spot in Koh Phangan

More Space , More Comfort , More Wind

Arguably one of the most comfortable and spacious kitesurfing spots in Thailand is now the home spot of Siam Pro Kite Kitesurfing Center at Baan Tai Beach in Koh Phangan. In this article, we explain why we now believe Baan Tai is better than our previous location in Thong Sala, and what makes this kite spot stand out among the best places for kitesurfing in Thailand and Southeast Asia.

In this article, we highlight the main differences between Koh Phangan’s two primary kitesurfing spots:

  • Baan Tai Beach Kite Spot
  • Thong Sala Beach Kite Spot

Wind Directions and Riding Between Baan Tai and Thong Sala

Both locations work well during the South West (SW) and South East (SE) wind seasons. The actual kitesurfing area stretches from Baan Tai Pier all the way to Thong Sala Pier, although riders usually choose one main area depending on the wind direction and conditions.

During the South East wind season, experienced riders can sometimes ride upwind from Thong Sala to Baan Tai when the wind is stable enough. During the South West season, the opposite is also possible, allowing riders to travel from Baan Tai all the way to Thong Sala. Essentially, in stable conditions it is possible to ride both upwind and downwind between the two spots. Although this sounds exciting, it is something only experienced riders usually attempt, and only when the wind is stable and predictable.

Why We Previously Preferred Thong Sala

For many years, our team believed that Thong Sala was the best kitesurfing spot in Koh Phangan — and in some situations it still is, especially during very low tides in the peak summer monsoon months. Near the main Thong Sala Pier, the water level is often slightly deeper and safer for riding during extreme low tide conditions.

Why Baan Tai Became Our Favorite Spot

However, after relocating our main station from Thong Sala to Baan Tai and experiencing a full South East wind season there, we can confidently say that Baan Tai is now our favorite place for kitesurfing in Koh Phangan, especially for beginner and intermediate riders learning kitesurfing in Thailand.

As we explained in our article about why Koh Phangan is one of the best places to learn kitesurfing in Thailand, safety, shallow water, and rider comfort are some of the most important factors for progression. After spending an entire season at Baan Tai, we now believe this spot delivers those advantages even better than Thong Sala in many conditions.

So what exactly makes Baan Tai Beach stand out so much?

Much More Space and a Safer Downwind Area

The first major difference is the actual riding area — Baan Tai is significantly wider and more spacious.

If you stand at our kite spot and look both left and right, you will notice a huge amount of open riding space stretching in both easterly and westerly directions. This gives riders the freedom to move away from the main crowd, find quieter water, practice new tricks, or simply cruise comfortably without constantly worrying about other riders nearby.

The total kiteable area accessible from Siam Pro Kite is approximately 1.6 km (0.994 miles) long, making it around 750 meters longer than the main Thong Sala beach kite spot which is at most 850 meters long.

This extra space becomes especially important during the South East wind season. If something goes wrong during your session — for example if you drop your kite in choppy water, lose your board, or struggle to ride upwind — conditions in Thong Sala can become stressful quite quickly. Riders may slowly drift toward the main Thong Sala Pier, ferries, speedboats, or other obstacles.

At Baan Tai, however, you have several additional kilometers of downwind safety space. This gives riders much more time to relaunch, recover equipment, solve problems calmly, or wait for assistance if necessary. For beginners learning kitesurfing in Thailand, this added margin of safety makes a huge difference.

As we also discussed in our Thailand Kitesurfing Guide, spacious shallow-water lagoons are one of the main reasons why Thailand has become one of the best destinations for beginner kitesurfing in Southeast Asia.

No Longtail Boats Along the Shore

Another major advantage of Baan Tai Beach is the complete absence of parked longtail boats along the shoreline.

In many parts of Thailand, longtail boats create difficult and sometimes dangerous obstacles for kitesurfers. In Thong Sala, riders often need to constantly avoid boats while launching, landing, or riding close to shore.

This can become especially sketchy when:

  • the wind suddenly becomes stronger,
  • the wind drops unexpectedly,
  • beginners are learning to ride,
  • or riders are attempting new tricks close to shore.

At Baan Tai, the open beachfront creates a much cleaner and safer riding environment with far fewer hazards and much more freedom of movement.

This is particularly important for students taking kitesurfing lessons in Thailand, where beginner confidence and safety are critical during the first stages of learning.

Cleaner and More Stable Wind

The final aspect that separates Baan Tai from Thong Sala is the quality and consistency of the wind itself.

As mentioned in our Thailand Wind Seasons article, wind quality can vary dramatically depending on geography, nearby islands, and seasonal monsoon direction.

Baan Tai Beach is positioned farther away from the small islands located offshore near Thong Sala. Because of this, the wind reaching Baan Tai is often noticeably cleaner, smoother, and more stable.

Compared to Thong Sala, the wind at Baan Tai is generally:

  • less gusty,
  • more evenly distributed,
  • and less affected by wind shadows or compression zones.

At Thong Sala, riders frequently notice that the nearby islands partially block or redirect the wind, creating inconsistent gusts throughout different sections of the riding area. This can make conditions feel unpredictable on certain days.

At Baan Tai, the wind tends to flow more naturally across the beach, creating a more comfortable and enjoyable kitesurfing experience overall.

For riders searching for the best kitesurfing spots in Thailand, especially during the South East monsoon season, Baan Tai has now become our personal top choice in Koh Phangan.
