Kitesurfing for Kids in Thailand: Can Children Learn in Koh Phangan?
If you’re wondering whether children can learn kitesurfing in Thailand, the answer is a confident yes! With calm lagoons, warm water, and steady breezes, Koh Phangan is one of the most child-friendly places in Asia to start this exciting sport. At Siam Pro Kite, we believe that with the right approach, equipment, and supervision, kitesurfing can be a safe, confidence-building, and unforgettable experience for young learners.

Kitesurfing isn’t just for adults — it’s a sport that can inspire and empower children too. With the right conditions and instruction, kids can safely experience the magic of harnessing the wind.
At Siam Pro Kite in Koh Phangan, we’ve guided many young students through their first rides, and the results often go beyond what parents expect.
Let’s take a closer look at what children of different ages can achieve on the water.
-
Extra Young Learners (Ages 5–7)
Very young for the sport, but possible to try kite control for fun.
At this age, lessons focus on short, exciting sessions with simple two-line trainer kites (not attached to a harness), which makes them extremely safe — if the child loses control, they simply let go of the bar and the kite loses power instantly.
Kids typically weigh 15–30 kg, so full four-line kites are usually too strong. Still, with strong interest and good coordination, some can try small four-line foil kites under close supervision.
Lessons emphasize exploration and confidence — feeling the wind, seeing how kites move, and maybe trying simple body dragging.
A typical “course” might be 20–30 minutes per day for a few days, adding up to 2–3 hours total. By the end, they often learn to:
- Fly a 2-line trainer kite independently
- Steer a 4-line foil kite under instruction
- Perform basic figure-eights (power strokes)
- Walk with the kite parked overhead
- Body drag in shallow water
Some especially talented kids may even manage short water starts — an impressive feat at this age!
-
Pre-Junior Learners (Ages 8–10/12)
By this age, children have longer attention spans and stronger learning ability. With a weight range of 25–45 kg, they can already wear a harness and control a real four-line kite safely.
They begin to understand the wind window and practice core kite control skills — flying, parking, body dragging downwind and upwind, and basic relaunching. The main challenges are often physical ones like relaunching in deep water or performing self-rescue, which require more strength.
Progress tends to be fast, and lessons remain light and playful to prevent fatigue. Courses usually last 4–6 hours over a few days, and many students manage short rides by the end — a huge milestone!
-
Junior Level (Ages 12–14)
At this stage, with body weight between 40–60 kg, children can do nearly everything adults can. Their coordination and comprehension are well developed, allowing them to understand theory and apply it in practice.
They begin with theory on the beach — learning about wind direction, safety, and equipment setup — then move into the water to develop full kite control and confidence. With supervision, they can handle all the basic skills: body dragging, relaunching, and water starts. Teens often progress quickly and may even begin independent riding within a few sessions.
The First Lesson: Learning the Basics
Lessons usually begin with about 30 minutes of theory on the beach — learning wind direction, strength, safety, and gear setup. You’ll also discover why kite sizes vary and how to choose the right one for your weight and conditions.
Kitesurfing has several disciplines (freeride, big air, freestyle, wave, and foil), but beginners always start with freeride, focusing on control and enjoyment rather than tricks. Before heading into the water, instructors teach safety and self-rescue, an essential step that some less professional schools overlook.
Once you’ve learned the basics, it’s time to practice kite control in the water. This is where you learn to generate and manage power safely. You’ll practice parking the kite at different positions, steering one-handed, water-relaunching, and performing self-rescue. These skills form the foundation of kitesurfing and build your confidence for everything that follows.
Body Dragging: A Crucial Skill
After mastering kite control, you’ll learn body dragging — moving through the water using only the kite’s power, without a board. This skill is key for retrieving your board after a fall or returning to shore safely.
There are two types: downwind (for learning power control) and upwind (for recovering lost equipment).
Most students take about 1–1.5 hours to learn body dragging, depending on water depth and wind strength. It’s a fun and empowering step that shows you can control both kite and body with confidence.
The Water Start: Taking Your First Ride
With solid control and body dragging mastered, you’re ready for the water start — your first real ride!
This requires stable wind (at least 8–10 knots) and water between knee and chest depth. At first, it can be tricky juggling the kite, board, and balance, but every crash and splash is part of the fun and learning.
You’ll start by riding downwind, with the instructor helping reset your position each time. As your control improves, you’ll learn how to edge the board and ride upwind — the moment you can do this, you’ve reached true independence.
Moving Toward Independence
Once you can ride upwind consistently, you’re officially a kiteboarder!
At this point, you’ll need less supervision and can rent gear to practice on your own. This milestone marks not just independence in the water, but also a sense of achievement that stays with every new rider.
How Young Can Children Start Kitesurfing?
It depends on each child’s build and coordination — but ideally, kids can start around 10–12 years old, and in Thailand’s gentle winds, even lighter children (25–30 kg) can take safe beginner lessons.
At Siam Pro Kite, we’ve taught students as young as 7 years young 😉 their first kite piloting skills on the beach. Our focus is always on fun, safety, and confidence, creating lasting memories and a lifelong love for the sport.
Siam Pro Kite is a multicultural community on a tropical island paradise where kiteboarders of all ages and levels come together to share their passion and joy for this spectacular sport.
