Kitesurfing in Thailand: Koh Phangan vs Koh Samui — Best Wind Season & Spot Guide

Where?

Koh Phangan and Koh Samui are two of the most famous islands in the Gulf of Thailand. While Koh Samui is larger, more developed, and known for its luxury resorts, Koh Phangan offers a more authentic, nature-rich vibe with a strong kitesurfing culture.

If your main goal is maximum kite time, Koh Phangan is the clear winner. The island’s geography gives it exposure to three main wind directions, meaning you can kite for up to 9 months per year. All kite spots are easily reachable within 30 minutes from anywhere on the island, so riders can be “on standby” and hit the water as soon as the wind picks up.

Koh Samui, on the other hand, is more spread out. The two main kite spots — Nathon and Hua Thanon — are far apart, and unless you live right next to one, commuting can be time-consuming.

When?

Koh Phangan’s main windy periods are:

  • January – April: Steady SE winds (12–20 knots), great for beginners and intermediate riders.
  • July – September: Strong SW winds (12–25 knots & 20–35 knots during storms), excellent for intermediate and advanced riders.
  • October – December: NE winds kick in — less consistent, but still kiteable many days, the wind is unstable and unpredictable.

Koh Samui’s windy periods follow a similar seasonal pattern, but generally with 1–3 knots less wind compared to Koh Phangan. This difference is enough to make certain light-wind days in Samui unrideable while Phangan is still buzzing.

  • Ban Tai Beach Area – another popular spot
  • Chaloklam – most popular spot during the North East wind season during the high season
  • Haad Rin Beach – secondary option when during North East wind season direction shifts more Easterly, prone for advanced and very confident riders due to deeper water, narrow beach and stronger swell

Downsides:

Final Verdict: Which Island is Better for Kitesurfing?
